Rare 1960S Hand Knit Fishnet Full Length Body Con Dress Gown in Pale Blue With Turquoise Sequins, Mermaid Dress, Fitted Stocking Effect£195.00
I nearly missed this but could not leave it behind even though it is not my usual thing (but then what is I wonder, do I have a usual thing? I digress…). It was hanging, almost hidden & looking like nothing much but when I extracted it from the back of the rack, my jaw dropped. What an incredible, one-of-a-kind dress! This one will turn heads. It is quite incredible & rare, not least for having survived but also for its style. It dates from the 1960s & is hand knit. I think the wool may be angora as it has that soft fuzziness to it, but I am not sure. It is done in a sort of chainstitch but in a fishnet effect. Each diamond on the “fishnet” is just under 1cm x 1cm. It is then covered with iridescent turquoise sequins: if you group 4 diamonds together, 2 up & 2 across so they make a larger diamond, there is a sequin on each point of these. in other words, there are hundreds, maybe thousands, put on by hand. The effect is stunning. This is part showgirl or Marilyn in Jean Louis leaving nothing to the imagination & part mermaid. This dress is very see through. Wear as little or as much as you like under it, it will still turn heads. It has quite a bit of stretch to it so will nicely cling to your curves like a bias cut dress does. I suppose the only bit about it that is very 60s in my mind is the sleeves which are extra long & slightly bell shaped at the ends, otherwise the style is timeless. It is shown on Faye who measures 34-25-35 & the headless mannequin which is 36-25-37. It fits both, but is probably a bit shorter on the headless mannequin than Faye as it will, like a bias cut dress, shorten a bit if you are larger. It is hard to get accurate measurements because it is has stretch, but I will endeavour to vie you a range from at rest to what I think it will stretch to without warping. Bust: 30-36 inches; waist 26-30 inches, hips 28-36 inches. It may be able to go a bit bigger (especially if you are say bigger in one area, but smaller in the others) but that seems to be the range without the fishnet diamonds pulling out of shape. The shoulders are 15 inches wide & the length is 58 inches at rest (it will shorten a bit on, but Faye is 5’8″ tall in heels if that helps). It is in very good condition which is miraculous. I have been handling it so carefully & I think it might be a bit tougher than it looks (but still, best to be cautious when wearing & handling). Obviously you do not want to stretch it too much so it is best for someone close to 36/30/36 max, maybe a bit more, & less than 15 inches wide in the shoulders. Also, this is clean, but not cleaned by me. I have not tested the sequins. I do not think they will be celluloid because they are later than the 20s/30s when celluloid sequins were used, but do test one getting it wet before you hand wash this to make sure. I can see no marks & no pulls either. It is fuzzy by nature. The only fault I could find is there is a break on the right arm. It is just on one diamond (but that essentially
